This week’s U.S. Amateur Championship reminds me of some firsts and a last in my golfing life. It was 60 years ago (wow) when I won my second and final U.S. Amateur title in September 1961 at Pebble Beach. Two months later, I turned professional and it was the following June when I won my first tournament and major in the 1962 U.S. Open at Oakmont—this week’s U.S. Am host venue.
For my last U.S. Amateur win at Pebble Beach, I took my friend Deane Beman’s advice and walked off the course and created what was a forerunner to today’s yardage book. The @USGA still has that scorecard and my notes from 1961, and I remember it like it was yesterday! Swipe left to hear me explain each hole on the back 9.
Congrats to the 312 golfers who made the field this week at Oakmont and the 64 golfers who advanced to today’s match play. Best wishes to all!
