It’s only fitting today marks the start of Ryder Cup week, because on this day in 1969 my friend Tony Jacklin and I played in the final singles match at Royal Birkdale — with our match even, as well as the overall team score tied. It ended that way, when I picked up Tony’s coin and conceded a short putt on 18.
As I told Tony then, “I don’t think you would have missed that putt, but I wasn’t going to give you the chance.”
Humble thanks to the @PGA of America, @TheRyderCup and Aon for creating the Nicklaus-Jacklin Award to recognize a player this week who makes makes the right decisions in the spirit and goodwill of the matches! Best of luck to both teams!
