Ida B. Wells, civil rights hero and one of the nation’s first investigative journalists, was born on this day in 1862.

A feminist and anti-lynching advocate whose reporting documented lynchings in the American south, Ida become integral in groups striving for Black justice, and she went on to help found @naacp.

She was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize last year.
