Congratulations, Wally Funk! You did it!

As part of the 1961 Women in Space program, which included her and 12 other women (the Mercury 13), Wally passed all the rigorous tests needed to go to space, but the program was cancelled, after doubts were raised about whether women “should even be taking part in such a thing.”

Two of the 13 took the case to a congressional subcommittee. John Glenn testified against them, saying that including women in the space program “may be undesirable.”

Wally went on to became the 1st female investigator for the FAA and the 1st female air safety controller for the NTSB.

This morning Wally, age 82, fulfilled her lifelong goal and became the oldest person ever to fly to space.

A success story 50+ years in the making.

Never give up.
