49 years ago this week, Bernice Gera became the first woman professional umpire to work an @milb game, taking place in Geneva, N.Y.

She sued for her right to perform the job, and the NYS Court of Appeals agreed. The Court found being a man wasn’t a “bona fide occupational qualification” to work as an umpire.
